Mary Ann Milne's box.
A rare and unusual piece of Scottish and lighthouse history. A leather
bound small kist or box inscribed to a brass plate "Mary Ann Milne Signal Tower Arbroath"
The Signal Tower was the accommodation for lighthouse keepers families
who worked at the Bell Rock light, which is situated 11 miles of Arbroath, Scotland. One of the UK's most famous lights
it was designed by Robert Stevenson, Grandfather of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island.
Thomson Milne was a keeper there circa 1819- 1839. This box belonged
to either his wife or daughter.
The leather of the box and the iron work which binds it are saturated
in generations of sea salt.
The Bell Rock is still working today and is the oldest working sea washed
lighthouse in the world. The Signal Tower is now a museum.
Bruised, battered and sold. Suitable for Treasure Trove
storage.
A rare pair of silver knitting needle covers in the form of
owls. English, late 19thc.
A very rare and beautifully hand painted Mauchline ware snuff box, circa
1830/40.
A good spongeware bowl, probably Kirkcaldy, sponge printed in bold colours
and of strong design. Scottish circa 1880.
