Scottish Antique Spongeware Patriotic child's motto bowl
Scottish Antique spongeware child's mottoware porridge bowl with "It's a long, long way to Tipperary" stamped to the inside.

Round the edge of the bowl are sponged the interlinked flags of France and Great Britain between which is a crown. The coloured part is all sponged, the black lettering has been stamped.

The song "It's a long way to Tipperary" was a popular music hall song written by Jack Judge in 1912. During the First World War it became even more popular still as a soldier's marching song.

Many different variations of children's bowls with this written in them occur. They all date to around 1915, as does this shape and type of motto bowl.

The idea of putting the picture at the bottom of the bowl is that it encouraged the child to eat up its porridge, so that it could see the picture.

5cm high x 16.5cm wide at the top.
